I wanted to build a modern farmhouse on 12 acres at the mouth of the Naramata Bench. Surrounded by grapes, the “Plein de Vie” vineyard planted in 2012 was used to produce my winery’s best wines.
The house was designed by architect Lucia Sakhrani of ds8.ca and built by Ritchie Custom Homes in Penticton, BC. As well as collaborating with Lucia and and Ritchie throughout the build, I did the interior design work. The house was built to be both a rough-wearing home and a functional farmhouse for my young family. It was inspirited by the inside-outside ethos of mid-century modern architecture of southern California and modernist vacation homes enjoyed in the Caribbean . Lu and I travelled together enjoying inspired spaces together that truly brought the outside in, creating a seemless living space that flowed throughout the home. The home’s high vaulted post and beam ceiling (created from 100-year old fir beams which were hand-notched) was inspired by the Japanese vernacular of minka or “folk dwellings" and nōka farmhouses. The gorgeous clerestory windows and large overhead fans provided non-stop natural light as well as ventilation and passive cooling in the heat of the Okangan summers. Favourite features included a stunning kitchen and bar with out-door kitchen “pass” through sliding windows out to a summer outdoor kitchen, wood-burning oven, bar and plunge pool. It was a house made for entertaining and so many great parties were enjoyed in this space.
